ScaleTrains Dash 9 Install (another version)

(1/3) > >>

KPack:
I have to thank Orlando for his beautiful install on his ST Dash 9 (https://rpug.pdc.ca/index.php/topic,954.0.html).  It motivated me to finally get my ST Dash 9 out and get to work.

I had been mulling over different speaker options in my head for a while, and couldn't make up my mind.  I wanted to try something different but wasn't sure how it would work.  In the end I decided to go for it, with little concern for how irreversible it was.

The goal was to stuff one of these TB speakers somewhere into the locomotive: http://www.tb-speaker.com/products/t0-2008s

This is the smallest speaker they make, and even it is pretty big.  These have some pretty decent bass.....more than anything else I've heard, including Scale Sound Systems.  The next size up is even more impressive, but it is too big to fit into a standard hood unit without removing the rear drivetrain.  What I like about these speakers is they are a self-contained unit.  The driver is nice and the cone is soft rubber.  The second cone is a passive radiator which gives the whole assembly a lot more bass and volume.  These aren't the loudest speaker, but volume is not what I'm after.  I prefer good sound.

At first I considered putting into the fuel tank but the motor sits too low on the ScaleTrains locomotives.  So I decided to break out my angle grinder and cut-off wheel and perform surgery on the rear of the locomotive.

I took a grinding wheel in the Dremel to the speaker and thinned out the sides to allow it fit easier, as well as removed the mounting tabs.

Here it is all buttoned up and ready to go.  In front of the Railpro module is a keep alive that I'm trying out.

Video of the sound and lights is coming next.

Looks great, I see some other interesting things hiding in there. I can't wait to hear about your results on this install!

Alan:
So jealous of all the space inside a modern 6 axle. There isn't room for a gnat after installing an LM in an Atlas S2.

KPack:
Sorry for the delay guys, here's a video comparing the TB speaker to a Scale Sound Systems.  I wanted to see if I could match or exceed how the Scale Sound speaker performed.  That being said, Scale Sound is way easier to install.

Orlando:
Nice job kevin! 👍👍👍
