Title: Wiring troubles. Help appreciated.
Post by: Davidbross on March 28, 2021, 09:45:31 AM
I’m trying to wire lights for the first time.  It’s not working.

I’m using a lm3s. I don’t think I’m getting power out of the board.  I have tried both a volt meter and an led to see if I’m getting power.

Here’s what I did to wire and test.   One wire to the 5+ which is the outermost post on one end of the board.  Other wire to white wire on harness on other end of the board.  Find engine on the remote. Configure front light to be white wire and turn on.   Should be power. Not getting any.   Tried volt meter and led. Tried led with and without resistor.  Lastly checked led with another power source.  Led works fine.

I believe you are using an LM-3S-G not an LM-3S, they are very different.

Yes. It is the one for g/o scale.

Yes.  Sounds. Motor control are perfect.

Something doesn't sound right. Assuming you are using track power and not battery, when you refer to the "board" do you mean the LM or the manufacturer's board in the locomotive? If you mean the LM, then the position of the white wire is not on the end of the board, but is in the middle according to the wiring diagram. That would indicate that you possibly have the wrong 9-pin harness. Also, if there is no manufacturer's board then the LEDs must have a resistor.

Battery power. When I say end of board I just mean it’s on the end left to right.  It’s definitely in the middle. I do have the right harness. It can with the board.  The only board I’m using is the lm3sG.  All other boards were pulled out of the loco.

Bill. I configured the button as a simple on off.

the other part of Tim's question was are you using an LED or an incandescent bulb?  if an LED, are you using a resistor in series with it?  if not, it probably blew immediately when you first turned it on.  for a white LED you need a 100 ohm resistor.  I usually put the resistor on the negative leg of the LED.

If you read the original post you will see it’s an led. You will also see I tested the led again after trying to get it to light with the board. The led still works so not blown.  Again the problem is no power from the board to the lighting wires.  I’ve tried every wire.

Can you give us the full detail on how you configured the button on the HC?

What wire, what effect, what button image... everything?

sorry for missing those details.

are the other 5 outputs also dead?

in any case, I'm sure Ring will repair or replace the module.  I had a very good experience with Ring with a similar issue (not with the -G model, though).

Let's hope it's not the module.  I've spent many hours working on loading sounds etc.

Check the program revision of the module. Should be 2.30. Make sure you are using headlight ON-Off Rev 2.

I know for my first light wiring of the module that I got the LED's wired backward and as you know LED's only will light in one direction, easy fix as I knew right quick what I did wrong. My module did work as it should after switching the wires and all was set from the factory in the correct possession. I try to keep my wiring colors to match the RailPro color codes, just easier to trace any problems you might have on down the road. I think you mentioned that you had downloaded several sounds and you didn't want to loose them, I thought these sounds were stored in the hand controller and transfer to the modules is very fast, ie., no loss of sounds. Correct me if I'm wrong.

The handhold doesn’t hold much. And transfer for me takes a long time.

Bill - absolutely.  My led didn't light b/c there were two wired together in a way that probably made them a 6 volt.  Even now at 100% brightness setting they are a little dim.  BTW, the brightness adjustment is a nice feature.
