Title: Hit a roadblock trying to load my picture
Post by: Josephbw on April 12, 2016, 07:54:54 PM
I took the picture, loaded it in PAINT, got it sized, saved it as a .bmp file, and all is well. I opened up the Railpro Assistant, got through all that with no problems, but when I get to the last step to actually load the picture in the LM and HC, I get a "file in use" error. I've deleted the file several times, renamed it to "no name", and it still won't let me upload the picture to the HC.

Like I said everything looked normal right up until the last step, and my further efforts so far have met with failure.

Any ideas?

The picture is the pre-PAINT version before I shaped it up.

What are you naming the picture as?

To my knowledge, the HC will give you the "file in use" error if you are trying to delete the existing picture that a locomotive is using.  For example, each Railpro module comes with the stock RE Loco as the picture.  You CANNOT delete that picture from the module UNTIL you have loaded a new picture and set that new picture as the picture for the locomotive.  Only then can you delete the old picture.

I'm not sure if this is what you're running into or not, but that's the only way I know of to get the "file in use" error.

Hi Kevin,
I named it RI (road #), That didn't work, so I named it "no name", that didn't work, so I tried to delete both and if I remember right it said that the file was in use ( I know I should write this stuff down, but I seldom think about it until it's too late). I'll start over again tomorrow evening and see if I can get through this.
I might try a different loco picture and see where that goes.
Thanks Kevin

don't forget to set the photo for the locomotive you are trying to delete it from to another photo.

Oh boy, a conversation, I was starting to have withdrawal symptoms... ;D

Joe, The others have pretty well covered the loading of the picture into the module and that you must set the new picture before you can delete the old picture from from the module (don't forget to save the new configuration) but it sounds like your not even getting that far and your trouble is actually loading the picture onto the HC correct?

I've sized your picture and attached it so you can try it with this one and see how it goes.  A small point, the general way for pictures on RailPro is to have the #1 end (ie forwards) on the left hand side of the picture. It may seem like a very small thing but it does help let you know which
way is forward and which way is reverse. Not so much a problem for US outline I suppose but elsewhere where double ended locomotives
are common it sure is a good rule to follow.

Thanks for the help guys. Can you explain exactly what "set the picture" means. The picture I posted was pre-editing. The one I was using looks just like the one you posted Tim. I have to leave in a bit, and will be back after supper. I'll try again this evening. Thanks again.

"set the picture"  basically what I was string to say was that if the picture was "chosen" anywhere in the RailPro system, you need to "choose" a new picture in that setting before you can delete the old one.

Or worded another way: if the picture is assigned to a locomotive already, you have to assign a new picture before removing the old one.

I just learned something too, another way to get the file in use error. Not only can't you delete a picture from a module if it's the current picture you can't delete it from the HC either. From the HC-2 manual: TIP: You will not be allowed to delete some files that are in use.  For example, if a  picture on a locomotive is the currently active picture, you will not be allowed to delete  that file.

So, if a module is using say the RE Loco picture you can't delete the RE Loco picture from the module or the HC.

I think this might be the cause of Joe's trouble but I'm not sure.

Joe, let's follow these steps and let us know where it fails you if it does.

1. Import the picture (use the one I did, I know it works) into RailPro Assistant. Delete your one from RP Assistant first if it's still in there.

2. Download the picture to your HC using RailPro Assistant.

3. Copy the picture from the HC to the LM (Tools > Update Software > Copy File > From HC to the LM you want)

4. Select the locomotive and go to the Locomotive setup page (shifter and screwdriver button)

5. Press the locomotive picture above the save button. Select the new picture. The picture displayed should now change to the new picture. You do not actually have to press the save button.

6. Now you can delete the old picture from the LM. If no other modules are using the old picture then you can also delete the old picture from the HC as well.

I had to give up for tonight. I don't feel well, I have a splinter deep in my finger that I can't dig out, I tried re-entering everything, and got to the same dead end, then RP Asst. locked up on me, then I tried to respond to this thread, and I accidentally deleted the post, then I lost internet connection on my crappy Lenova notebook confuser. I figured that I better quit before I destroy something. Hopefully tomorrow will be a better day.

Thanks again for all your help,
Joe

Oh I know those days all to well Joe.

You may have to possibly re-install RailPro assistant. Under the hood it's not good software (It actually runs better without having a username/password entered into it so it can connect to the net).

I've sent you an personal message.

I'm back again. I want to thank Tim for graciously offering to open up a chat line to talk me through the process. Unfortunately I didn't realize Tim is in Australia and with the time difference that didn't happen.

Tonight I tried to reload the RI 4372 picture and got to the same point of failure. When I get to the picture manager, hit import picture, I can select any of the four pictures I have edited, and I get the "Select a different file name - name already in use" message on any of the engines and that's where everything comes to a screeching halt.

I also had to download a new RP Assistant as my old one went belly up.

I'm also having an issue with Paint, changing my picture size from 480 x 180 to 480 x 360 after I save it. I haven't tried to delete anything tonight, so deletion isn't the issue I believe.

I also changed the name of the RI 4372 to ROCK 4372, and that didn't work either. I also changed the name of the engine in the HC to RI hoping that would help, but all I got was a slap in the face. :(

The only good thing, is I feel a little better today, so I put away my snow blade, took down my 72" mower deck and mounted it under my tractor, dispatched a coon that's been tearing the crap out of my back yard, took my broken lawn roller arm to town to get it welded up again, and also removed my front end loader from my tractor, and mowed a little bit of my 6 acre yard.

I guess I'll go work on the railroad for a while now.

Good night, Joe

I just want to give a public THANK YOU to Tim for leading me through the abyss of the manual to final success. I have one of my locos with my picture on it now. Now I can progress through the rest of them, thanks to the guidance of Tim.  ;D ;D ;D

You da man!!!

So what was the problem?  Better that we all know so that we can help others avoid the same issue.

Glad you got it figured out and glad Tim was able to help you.

I don't want to embarrass Joe here so I really hope he doesn't mind me posting it.

Long story not-so-short, I setup a live chat so that I could help Joe in real time. We went though every step in order and only that way did the root problem come up, and quite innocently too. I don't think this would have come out in normal forum posting.

Basically I'm putting it down to the user interface of the RailPro Assistant software. The main problem was clicking on the import picture button more than once. This gives the filename in use error, as the picture is already imported into the software.

I'm hazarding a guess that since it doesn't really tell you "successful import" or anything like that after you've done the import picture the first time some will instinctively think it hasn't worked so they try again, which will give them the error.

On this particular engine, the RI 4372, something happened the first time I tried to import it into the system, and it didn't work. My subsequent importations of the same engine were then nullified. I really appreciate Tim's patience and knowledge. I may get time this evening to do another one, hopefully it will go better.

Joe, with a smile on his face.  ;D

Thanks Tim, I'll give it a try. It might be a day or two before I get a chance, MOH has a long list of "honey do's" I need to get done before getting back to the railroad.  :P
