Hey All,

I just installed my RailPro system in an Athearn RTR SW1500 switcher locomotive. Damn, it's tight in there! I shoe-horned the LM-3S-21 module onto the factory motherboard and also installed a speaker with some modification to the chassis.

Has anyone installed a LM-3S-21 but removed the factory motherboard to save space? I assume there are resistors on the motherboard for the LEDs so by removing it I would have to install my own resistors? Is there anything else I would lose?

Just wondering if anyone has removed the factory motherboard or if that is a practical solution.

Thanks,

Rob S.

I've not encountered that before, but I've not used RPA for a long time. I'll have to get a Linux distro running in a Virtual Machine and see if I can replicate what your experiencing though because you say it happened on your Windows PC as well it kinds of points to an issue outside of your PC. ie between your router and Rings server. I can't see why you'd meed to reboot your PC to be able to connect again though.

To clarify the connection being lost is the one between RPA and Rings server and when you say installed you mean downloaded from the server into RPA and HC Sim?

RailPro Specific Help & Discussion / Railpro Assistant connection issues
« Last post by snowdog on August 13, 2025, 09:23:25 AM »
I'm hoping there is a fix for this.

I'm running Railpro Assistant AND HC Simulator on my Linux box (Thanks to G8B4Life) and have an issue with Railpro Assistant. I can get it to connect to the server (usually on the first try) but after the first file is installed, it loses connection. I then have to restart my computer to get it to work again. This also happened when my box was Windows so I don't think the OS is the issue.

Has anybody else experienced this? Is there a fix? Or a workaround?

Thanks in Advance,
Snowdog

Thanks - yea LEDs are once and done. Might just do one with incand and see how it goes.
I have run the P2ks at full dc throttle like 16v, but I'm thinking the P2k boards probably have resistors, which will be coming out.

Will be interesting, will report back. Wish me luck.

Hey all,
If LEDs ... question is ...
The ones I have have the preinstalled resistor on the positive wire, LM3s diagrams show it on the neg side ... does it matter ?

Figured I'd start a fresh thread on this. Thanks

Electrically, the side of the LED the resistor is on does not matter. It is there to reduce the total current flow through the circuit so the LED does not get blown.

Overall, you'll be happier with LEDs.

RailPro Software Updates / LM-3S-21 Rev Update?

Hey all,

Anyone know if there has been a software update for the LM-3S-21? My Rev is 1.00.

Thanks,

Yeah,

Squeaky is the man. (Clayton, that is.)

Just bought my Rail Pro system from him.

Need to buy some more equipment soon.

...I'd like to keep the Incand. Bulbs at first, easy to change out later, assume they will work at 5v from what I understand is the voltage putout of the modules.
Question is .... is this a fact? Incand will work? , no resistors needed ? or just bite bullet and do LEDs ?

This is incorrect. The output of the LM-3S outputs is slightly less than track voltage, so almost 14v. I don't know what rating of the bulbs used in P2K locomotives was but if they are 12v then your likely fine (just turn the brightness down to essentially lower the output voltage). If the bulbs are 1.5 or 3v etc then you'll need to appropriately lower the voltage with external components, or just replace with LEDs and resistors anyway..
