RailPro Specific Help & Discussion / Sparks When Entering a Reverse Section?
« Last post by KB02 on March 16, 2025, 07:42:00 AM »
I have been working on rebuilding my layout into a modular, or sectional, style. I have one section of track set up with the AR-1 reverser. I have noticed that when trains are entering the reversed section, and the current had previously been in the opposite polarity, I will see a small spark where the loco wheels hit the track.
A.) Should I worry about this?
B.) Any way to reduce this from happening?
Perfectly willing to admit to a tiny bit of simple paranoia here. Model trains and tiny sparks go together like PB&J. This is just something I happened to notice and now my brain is fixating on it, you know?

weird, most LGB use a hall effect switch... and it is 3 leads... can you see where the wires connect?

RailPro Specific Help & Discussion / Chuff wiring on an LGB Mikado
« Last post by algae on March 15, 2025, 05:54:09 PM »
Hi,

I'm converting an LGB Mikado and have questions about the chuff wiring.

It appears that there are a black and brown wire coming off the motor block that is likely to be the chuff circuit.  A friend of mine converted a Mikado some years ago and insists that the chuff signal only requires one wire.

The chuff signal is generated by 4 little magnets on the rear-most drive wheel rotating past a magnet mounted on the motor block.

Is the chuff circuit two wires or one wire?  Does it have polarity?  My guess is two wires, no polarity.

I apologize, been busy and railroad was not on my plate.   I have a decent size layout and have 4 AM-1's scattered around it, each controlling 4 switches.   So I am not running over 20 ft of wire from any AM-1 to a switch.  Each Am-1 has it's own small battery power.

RailPro Specific Help & Discussion / Re: Sound equipped MU’ed with a non sound unit

I'm with Bill as well and I just like the fuller sound of multiple locos.

I'm running Fn3. I have a 2 loco GE 45 Ton set up with a speaker in the front hood, a big speaker between in a box car and another in the trailing loco rear hood. It sounds awesome.

If money is the issue, get the sound module, but hold off on the speaker until you can afford it.

RailPro Specific Help & Discussion / Re: Steam Cuff Rate

Somewhere (on this board I think) Is an involved tutorial on setting the speed curve. That was supposed to help get the Chuff Rate close, but it was never perfect.  What scale are you?  If using the "G" module, you can trigger chuff with a reed switch and a magnet, or a locos built in chuff switch. It's still not perfect, but once you learn how to "play" the speed when accelerating and decelerating, it's pretty good.

You can certainly do one sound and one non-sound.  But I agree with Bill, if you are doing all the work anyways you may as well just do sound in each locomotive.  It will definitely sound better and be more realistic.  The cost is a bit more but not overly so.  I would at least put a LM-3S in each locomotive, and if needed you can hold off on the speaker for now.  But no reason to forego sound altogether.

Lots of people think this is a good idea, but personally I would not. If you ever want to change or split up the pairs, you lose a lot of flexibility and 2 locomotives always sound like 2 locomotives in real life, and that is true of the models as well.  I would go with all sound equipped.

Looking for thoughts and opinions on this.  So if one is running several 2 diesel lashups, would it be worth making one unit a sound LM-3s and the mate an LM-3 non sound?   All will get a PBM-2 though, and  speakers will be SSS.  Admittedly this is about saving in costs, but also wonder if doubling the sound sources, although independent units, would be good, great, bad or unnecessary.  In the end I’ll probably just end up doing all sound units, but I’m seeing what you folks in the know think about this.   Thanks.
