Hello - RailPro newbee here...

I have a number of sounds/picture/locomotives set up with the HC Simulator - and indeed was able to run locomotives in the dinning room one evening.

Just Took the plunge and purchased an HC-3-SUN. My search for info on 'cloning' config info from the HC Simulator application to a physical HC did not yield any info.

Might someone be able to point me in the right direction - or simply confirm that the feature does not exist?

Thank you in advance!

RailPro Specific Help & Discussion / Re: Lights causing LM-3S to overheat?

Sorry guys, between needing to clear a couple of recent snowfalls, a second emergency vet visit (dog is doing better now) and a very convoluted trip to get my mom to the airport, this past week/weekend has been exhausting. As such I've done ZERO railroading  :(

To top it off, now I've got some kind of bug.

Once I'm back in action, I'll crack the unit open again and check those connections and the other things mentioned.

Stay tuned.

Thanks... based on that, the OP could set the brightness way down on all the lights and convince himself that it's the lamps drawing too much.

Also perhaps the lower brightness would stop the system from overheating.

Lastly, perhaps the lowered brightness might be acceptable.

Greg, you asked "My question was if the RP decoder can set brightness by doing PWM on the headlight "outputs"...
"

The answer is yes. Each light output has a brightness adjustment that uses PWM to reduce the current.

RailPro Specific Help & Discussion / Re: Stuck in "Software Update" mode

The HC-3 does have a reset button. This is mentioned in the manual.

Leaving the HC plugged in constantly is not good either, that can also harm batteries. Letting the batteries run down to "flat" once in a blue moon is not going to harm them, what harms them is leaving them in a discharged state for extended periods of time.

Has the HC been plugged into the computer since you first tried to do a software update? if so then the HC might be stuck waiting for a response that it'll never get. It shouldn't happen of course but...  If you haven't done this then try it. Unplug the HC from the computer. See if the Software Update times out (wait a minute). If not see if you can get to the main page by pressing the Home Page button (default the far right physical button on the HC-3) and then powering off the HC and then powering it on again after waiting a few seconds.

so there has been no measurement of the current drawn
no one has figured out if there are dropping/limiting resistors
but changing to LEDs solved the issue for others.

it seems that figuring that out would help solve the mystery.

My question was if the RP decoder can set brightness by doing PWM on the headlight "outputs"...

you could also measure the voltage across the bulbs during the short time the system "works"

The HC-3 has neither a reset button nor a mechanical on/off switch. The home page is the only way I can access the power down mode.

I have had the HC connected to my hub to keep recharging the battery because the user manual says that if I let the battery run too low, it could be damaged.

The software has not timed out. It has remained on even after leaving it overnight.

I actually got an S Helper Service engine to work properly, but I still think it could revert back to my original problem at any time.

Right now, this problem is on the back burner due to another situation I described in another post here.

I am positive that I caused both these issues somehow. I'm just trying to find out what I've done wrong.

Hmmm, ok,

This is happening to all your locomotives right? What brands and type of locomotives?

Do the locomotives loose radio contact if you don't try to move them with the throttle? ie selected with the HC but just sit there, don't try to move them forwards or backwards.

You mentioned 8 pin plug so I'm wondering if there could be something about the board the LM's are plugged into. While it isn't impossible you could have a flaky HC I wouldn't think that'd be the case.

Well I can't see anything obvious, and checking other DCC installs Athearn does plug two globes into an output so that shouldn't be a problem.  The one thing I can see that could be an issue is check that the blue wire from the Keep Alive doesn't touch the white wire where you've soldered the Keep Alive to the board, if that happened it'd definitely cause an issue when you turned the lights on. Other than checking all your work again extra carefully I'm pretty much at a loss based on what I can see.

Oh, and the board you posted is different to what is in your model, but I don't think it makes a difference.
