I’m at my wits end, tried every combination possible. I did get them to light in the forward direction, but could not in reverse.

Simple solution per Robby, he wires them to the motor outputs.

I assume you are meaning bipolar, i.e. 2 leads, reverse polarity for other color.
the other bi-color are things like "common anode" with 3 leads, which are usually much easier.
