DDA40X prime mover sound files
« on: May 18, 2022, 02:10:47 AM »
Hello all,
I'm not sure which section to put this in, so feel free to move it about, if necessary..

I have just installed railpro into my new run Athearn Genesis DDA40X, Centennial engine. It prototypically has two prime movers. I was thinking i could download two 645 engines, slightly different and have them turned on manually via two 'Prime' sound buttons. I tried it, and it doesn't work. Only the first sound file plays, after turning it on, and the second does not.

If the sound file in the second (or first position) is something other than the prime mover, the other button will trigger the prime mover, and i can switch the sound file of the other button to the prime mover #2, and it turns on. but this is tedious and then i can't turn the other one off haha

Does anyone have a prime mover sound file for this engine, or know of a potential work around for this issue?

I understand it's specific to this engine, but it's kinda lame to have it running around with only one engine one...

Instead of two sound files, what about 2 sets of speakers, each under the appropriate exhaust stack? At least then you'd have the sound of two prime movers.

Hello,
Yes, this model has two speakers in the locations described. Sounds like one engine.

The two sounds should be slightly offset, as one would start then the other, through the whole running process.

That’s why I tried to use two similar but different sounds

So, on the RailPro sound page, it lists a sound file with a DDM designation, but on the assistant, it doesn't show.

Also, I just noticed that the lighting files i have are all different than the one's on the assistant as well.

I wish that there was a way to see what the effect will look like prior to downloading it..

It is there, the DDM45 listing on the website plays the EMD 645-20 sound file, which is correct for the DDM45, not for a DD40AX.

As for the light effect files, if all the ones you have in the HC say rev 2 then they should be the same as what RPA shows as available for download, Ring dropped the revision number off the light effect filenames a while ago, I think about when the LM-1 was made able to use the Rev 2 effects.

Probably not an option in your scale, but a mini digital delay board and an amplifier board might be able to be connected to the LM and feed the second speaker with synchronized, but delayed sound.  I have a 1:20 scale GE 45 ton that would be nice with 2 speakers, but I've used all the room in one hood for the battery and LM.

Okay, I must be missing something, I did see it on their website, but it never loaded to play it, and I didn’t see if as an option to download from the assistant. I am confused.

And for the light effects, I’ll check..

Maybe I need to redo w load the assistant, it’s version:4.01.. :/

No, your not missing anything, The DDM45 sound sample doesn't load for me either. As I've mentioned before around here there is so much bad markup on that RailPro Sounds page I'm surprised any browser is able to render as much of the page as they do. However, the DDM45 sound file is the EMD645-20 which is downloadable in RPA.

Hey Tim, no dice. It does sound like the correct prime mover, but it's only one engine that turns on. it also does not like or allow two prime mover buttons to function. only listens to the first button in order.

Any other ideas?

I'm going to call Ring tomorrow i think.

As I stated earlier in the thread, the sound file for a DDM45 is not for a DD40AX, they are completely different locomotives, the DDM45 being a narrow gauge locomotive built for Brazil having a single 20 cylinder 645E3 prime mover (same as the SD45 on which the DDM45 appears to be based upon) . The DD40AX has two 16 cylinder 645E3 prime movers.

There is currently no way that I know of to utilise dual prime mover sounds until Tim Ring invents a way.

Tim,

I see, I miss understood what you were saying initially. Okay, thank you for clarifying that.

Maybe i'll just install a second sound module and only hook up a speaker to it, see if that works. Do you think if i set the motor load on a module that has no motor it'll work properly? or should i put some level of resistor between motor leads...?
that would get the two motors to sound from different ends of the chassis, and notch up as they move.

I would have to make sure they're always MU'd together for sound functionality.. does anyone know a way to permanently link two modules together? Like having two dcc engines programed to the same address?

Thanks,
Glenn

Glenn,

I suggest you call Ring Engineering and see what they recommend and that way this will also get on their radar as a function that people want.
