I'm curious, what would one of those look like and how would it work?

It's nothing more than a DCC decoder tester, so you can configure and test the LM out of the model. Years ago not wanting to spend heaps on a commercial unit I built one out of stripboard. https://rpug.pdc.ca/index.php/topic,549.0.html
