Current best practice for KA

I'm just getting started with RP.  I've read the forum from the current page back through page 7.  lots more to go!!

I'm wondering what the current best practice recommendation is for installing a KA with an LM-3S?  as I start converting my loco's from DCC I only want to work on each loco once!
