I don't really know what other manufacturers do as I don't really follow any of them but for many of them new features and bug fixes are a hardware update (a physical eeprom chip to replace) rather than a software upgrade. I think most DCC manufactures are on the ball on disseminating what updates do.

Ring on the other hand, is not content to let RPUG do it for him. The only reason we know and post it here is because some of us keep an eye out for updates because there is a history of no one knowing about them because his website doesn't get updated with them. Usually an update that introduces a new feature get put on his What's New page (eventually) but if an update is a bug fix or similar then it's anybodies guess if it will get a mention on his website or not.

RailPro Discussion & Help / Re: Loco Stopped. “Motor Over Peak Current”
« Last post by nodcc4me on May 12, 2021, 11:11:20 AM »
The locomotive may run, but if the default maximum current is lower than the actual current draw it may not run at all. Also, you would not be able to synchronize locomotives in consist very well. Ring strongly recommends setting the maximum current as soon as the LM is installed.

Is it SOP for DCC makers to soft-launch their updates this way? Such basic product support and marketing but Ring seems content to let the board do it for him.

Can the LM be used in a loco without setting Max Current at all?

SWA737,

I wouldn't think you've killed the motor, or damaged the LM either. I've run LM's before in my LM tester without setting the Motor Full Load Current without issue that I can remember, though it was all non loaded stuff (ie just a bare motor) just to check the motor outputs worked.

A couple of things you could try are:
  • Removing the LM from the HC and then redetecting it. It should indicate that the Motor Full Load Current test hasn't been done and the test may work this time.
  • Manually setting the Motor Full Load Current to a higher value and then trying the automatic test again.

If neither of those work it might be time to find out what the motor actually draws.

RailPro Discussion & Help / Re: Sound file transfer issue
« Last post by G8B4Life on May 12, 2021, 01:00:22 AM »
Related to this sound file transfer issues thread: is there a file size the RailPro Assistant cannot find on a computer?  I recently successfully loaded a picture the Assistant and HC-2 recognized, but RPA could not “see” the WAV file no matter where I had it on the computer.  File size was 7,771 KB.

RPA can "see" any file regardless of the files size. At the "browsing for a file" stage it's just a filter on the file extension so if the extension doesn't match or is non existent RPA won't show the file. Are you sure the file has a wav extension (filename.wav) and isn't accidentally named filenamewav with no extension? It can be easy to do and overlook this, especially if one's eyes are tired.

I just had a similar problem on a recent Railpro conversion. This is my 43rd converted engine. This is the first time I messed up setting up the controller. I set it on the track and begin to run it prior to doing the “Motor full load current. Just completely forgot to do it first. It ran for just a couple of seconds and then that was it. I then tried to go back and do the test but when I did, it said test failed and the little caution yellow triangle pops up saying “ Motor over peak current”. Did I possibly burn the motor up? The lights and sound work well.
